Guy Woueté

Guy Woueté (b. 1980 Cameroon), lives and works in Antwerp, Brussels, Douala and Penja.
He studied sculpture and painting in Douala and was a resident at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. He graduated from the University of Paris 8 and the School of Graphic Research (Erg) in Brussels, where he teaches. For him, art is not an end in itself, but an opportunity to observe and critique the times in which we live.
Woueté's work always contains elements of social criticism, questions of borders, migration and symbols of domination in an age of globalization. Using history as a source of material, Woueté mixes registrations of experiences, emotions and feelings in collages, installation, performance, video and photographic work. He also works in sculpture and painting and creates artists' books.

Woueté's work has been exhibited in many museums and art events such as SAVVY Contemporary (Berlin, Germany), MKHA (Antwerp, Belgium), S.M.A.K. (Ghent, Belgium), Museum de Lakenhal (Leiden, the Netherlands), KANAL-Centrum Pompidou (Brussels, Belgium), Beursschouwburg (Brussels, Belgium), the Kunstenfestivaldesarts (Brussels, Belgium), De Brakke Grond (Amsterdam, the Netherlands), the Biennale of African Photography (Bamako, Malí), the Lubumbashi Biennale (Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo), the National Museum Yaoundé (Yaoundé, Cameroon), the Dak'Art Biennales (Dakar, Senegal), the Havana Biennale (La Habana, Cuba), Enough Room for Space (Drogenbos, Belgium) and the Spazzju Kreattiv (Valletta, Malta).
