BabelCeremony: Surinamese rituals with Nawie

For this very last edition of the BabelFestival, we hold the Sunday before ceremonies.

Sunday high day! We close the week with age-old dances, rites and gastronomy from different cultural communities. A ceremony contains creative and symbolic expressions such as texts, music and culinary preparations.

Come and taste, listen and discover how rituals and traditions are experienced by these new Antwerp residents. Everyone is welcome!

Nawie

This Sunday is all about the Surinamese community in Antwerp-Merksem.

Surinamese dance, ceremonies, music & gastronomy.

Program: 

3-4.30pm: 

Traditional fashion showby Nawie: demonstrations of the clothing (Kotomisi, Pangi, Kamisa) of the Bush Creoles and their significance:The Creoles are a Surinamese population group descended from former African slaves. 

4.30pm-6.30pm:

Percussion and acrobatic traditional Creole dance, folk music and ceremoniesby the 12-member dance collective of the cultural performer group Komaisa from the Netherlands. 

In between, an explanation is given about the various rites and ceremonies. (Wasa, Aleke Bandja, Banamba & Kawina)

6.30pm-9pm:

Dancing to Surinamese tunes

Nawie cooks typical Surinamese: bami chicken, nasi chicken and moksi alesie, baka bana with peanut sauce, bara, pie and corn for 10 euros! Order your portion via the link below, because! Out=Out!
