Eva van Bemmelen
For Dutch artist Eva van Bemmelen (born 1993), painting is inextricably linked to language. Her work balances between typography and abstraction and is shaped by both her background in book design and her experience with dyslexia. She describes how she perceives sounds and shapes as if they were words. She translates these into monumental yet delicate works in which letters become portraits. Punctuation marks determine the rhythm and words open up spaces for relationships.
Eva studied graphic design at the Royal Academy of Art (KABK) in The Hague (2012-2016) and worked for five years as a book designer at Irma Boom Office (2015-2020). In 2023, she completed her Master's degree in Fine Arts at the typography workshop, ArtEZ, University of the Arts in Arnhem.
