Els De Laet

During my glass art studies at the academy in Berchem, I discovered lampworking, the shaping of hot glass in an open flame, as 'my' technique. The physics of hot glass fascinates me, and as a lampworker you are in close contact with the material. Shaping hot glass requires a great deal of skill, concentration and control, which makes it almost meditative.
All my work involves a form of repetition and movement, the latter sometimes literally.

The human figure also runs through it like a thread. I seek interaction with the viewer and, where possible, let them play an active role in directing the works. Ultimately, the glass plays the leading role: the uniqueness of the material, its transparency and its 'liquid hardness' determine the unique character of the work.
